Intimate Image Abuse

Intimate Image Abuse relates to the non-consensually sharing, or threatening to share, of intimate images. Such acts can have serious negative impact on individuals, causing mental health issues, with considerable distress and anxiety experienced by victims and survivors. This can include shame, helplessness, self-blame, isolation and humiliation, and damage to their professional lives, including their finances, education and employment.

An ‘intimate image’ is a photograph or video where the person or people are depicted engaging in, participating in, or being present during a sexual act, and/or where their genitals, buttocks or breasts are exposed or covered only with underwear, this also includes depictions that may have been AI-generated or faked.

4D HYPE prohibits Contributions threatening to disclose, or that disclose private sexual photographs, intimate images or films with intent to cause humiliation, alarm or distress, and for obtaining sexual gratification. 4D HYPE prohibits disclosing, or threatening to disclose sexual photographs, intimate images or films and we also prohibit Contributions that share sexual photographs, intimate images or films without consent. 4D HYPE also prohibits Contributions that share sexual photographs, intimate images or films without consent with the intent to cause humiliation, alarm or distress, and for obtaining sexual gratification (in reference to all the aforementioned prohibitions, we also prohibit Contributions attempting, conspiring, encouraging, assisting, or aiding and abetting the commission and/or facilitation of these).

Non-consensual sharing can manifest in the following ways:

  • as part of domestic abuse or coercive and controlling behaviour e.g. threats to share intimate images as part of domestic abuse by current or former partners so that they can coerce or exert control over a partner or former partner.
  • for financial gain, including ‘sextortion’, to force individuals to take part in criminal activity and to blackmail e.g. to perform sexual acts;
  • and by unknown perpetrators, where the common motivation is a mixture of social status, humour, sexual gratification and misogyny.

The latter may include sharing intimate images taken or made without consent. This includes images produced through upskirting and downblousing, intimate images made as deepfakes, or images taken as a result of hidden or hacked cameras. It also includes intimate images produced through the use of screen capture technology to create a permanent record of a livestream or ephemeral message. In addition, some perpetrators will hack into victims and survivors accounts to access intimate images.
